🩺 Uterine fibroids and physical activity: moving despite the pain

Updated: Sep 21

At Anfòm Fitness, we believe in the power of movement to transform both the body... and life itself. But what can you do when your body is slowed down by pain, discomfort, or diagnoses like uterine fibroids?

What are uterine fibroids?

Uterine fibroids (or leiomyomas) are benign tumors that develop in the wall of the uterus. They are very common, especially among Black women, and can go unnoticed or cause symptoms such as:

  • Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding

  • Pelvic pain

  • Chronic fatigue

  • Bloating or abdominal pressure

Although they are not cancerous, fibroids can affect quality of life, self-esteem, and motivation to stay active.

The role of movement in managing fibroids

While physical activity doesn’t make fibroids “disappear,” it can:

  • Reduce symptoms (pain, fatigue, stress)

  • Improve blood circulation in the pelvic area

  • Help regulate hormones (especially estrogen, which influences fibroid growth)

  • Promote a healthy weight, which can slow their development

What types of exercises are recommended?

At Anfòm, we suggest a gentle, progressive approach tailored to each body:

  • Yoga & mobility: to relax the pelvis, reduce stress, and reconnect with your body

  • Moderate step or dance: to activate cardiovascular health without excessive impact

  • Light strength training (Pilates): to support posture and reduce lower back pain

  • Active walking: simple, accessible, effective

ANFÒM Tip: Listen to your body. If a movement causes sharp pain or pelvic discomfort, slow down or modify it.

What treatments are available in Quebec?

Uterine fibroids can be treated in various ways depending on symptoms and pregnancy plans:

  • Medications: to reduce pain and bleeding (anti-inflammatories, hormones)

  • Embolization: to shrink fibroids without surgery

  • Conservative surgery (myomectomy): to remove fibroids while preserving the uterus

  • Hysterectomy: removal of the uterus in severe cases

  • In addition : a healthy diet and physical activity can help better manage symptoms.

It is important to choose the right treatment in consultation with a healthcare professional.
